This touching story from Today.com demonstrates that everyone, including children, can make a positive difference in the world. It’s not every day we hear about a child of 8 helping his favorite Waffle House server and befriending him. It turns out that breakfast is the most important of all meals. Dovonte Gardner greets Kayzen with high fives. The Kayzen family typically requests Devonte Gardner. Kayzen and his family learned of Devonte and his family’s heartfelt story. They moved from their mold and rat-infested apartment to a motel. Due to contamination, Devonte, his wife, and two daughters had to vacate without their possessions. Devonte needs a car, and he is working extra shifts. He and his wife are struggling. Ironically, Kayzen and his family faced a similar situation with mold in their rented home in 2019. They, too, lost everything because of the mold infestation.

Kayzen decided he needed to take action while eating his meal and help his friend. With the help of his Mother, Vittoria, they set up a GoFundMe page for Gardner. Initially, they asked for $5,000 to help with a car. This act of kindness became infectious, and the money continued to pour in after their goal. The total donations were over $100,000! Devonte Gardner and his family found an apartment. They could pay a full year’s rent, eventually buy a car and have money in a savings account. Gardner shared, “I am so touched by it all. As far as his little buddy goes, he’s my friend for life.” The little boy shared his experience with Little Rock TV Station THV11, “It just feels good to help someone else.”

How can children in your community make a positive difference in the lives of others? SignUpGenius.com offers 50 kid-friendly volunteering ideas. Helping people in the community, animals, the homeless, and the hungry are great ways to introduce children to helping and making a difference in their community. There are close-to-home activities and activities that parents and their children can participate in together. Donating books or art supplies to a homeless shelter for children, gathering canned food to deposit at a local food bank, and making care packages for the homeless are just examples of the many ideas.

The acts of kindness never go unnoticed, especially with the younger population. One eight-year-old boy thought of a way to help others and created a positive change. His idea spread throughout the community, and so many others became a part of an act of kindness. Everyone has the power to make a change and help those in need. Whether it is a GoFundMe drive, volunteering, assisting a shut-in neighbor, or simply reaching out and befriending another human. We all have the power to make a change on a small or large scale. What is important is taking the first move.
