Maxima Acuña de Chaupe’s journey as an environmental activist began in 2011 when she defied the Conga gold mining project in Peru. Although she had no ties to activist organizations, she rejected an offer to sell her 60-acre plot, determined to protect her land in Cajamarca. This region later protested against the $4.8 billion Conga mine after police clashes in 2012 left five demonstrators dead. Her refusal came amid plans by Newmont Mining and Peruvian company Buenaventura to develop a massive mining operation, targeting 7,400 acres of land and planning to drain two freshwater lakes for toxic waste disposal. Maxima’s land, where she grows potatoes and raises animals, stood at the heart of this project.

Maxima’s courageous stance aimed to protect her farm and the freshwater supply relied on by thousands in Cajamarca. Her commitment was recognized in 2016 with the Goldman Environmental Prize for halting the mine’s expansion and preserving critical natural resources. Her fight has brought significant awareness to environmental and human rights issues, impacting at least 2,000 community members who depend on the water and ecosystems the mine would have endangered.

Since resisting the mine, Maxima and her family have faced severe repercussions, including alleged surveillance by Peruvian police contracted by the mining companies. She recounts harassment, beatings, and threats, including an incident where police allegedly assaulted her and her children. In 2012, Newmont sued Maxima for illegal squatting, resulting in a suspended prison sentence and fines. However, in 2014, a higher court cleared her of criminal charges, and while her legal ownership of the land remains disputed, Maxima continues to resist.

Her resilience has inspired local communities and environmentalists worldwide. Despite ongoing intimidation, including the attack on her dog and the destruction of her crops, Maxima feels “energized and encouraged,” supported by global solidarity. She is determined to protect her land despite facing physical, psychological, and financial hardships for over five years. Reflecting on her resolve, Maxima notes that, despite her lack of formal education, she has learned to “resist” and will not be “defeated by the mining companies.”

Newmont has denied several allegations, claiming it respects local communities and has attempted to negotiate in good faith. Despite this, Peru remains a dangerous environment for activists, with Global Witness reporting that 61 activists have been killed in the past decade, nearly 80% linked to mining.

Maxima’s fight underscores the high costs of defending natural resources in Peru. She stands unwavering in her pursuit to protect her homeland and community against powerful mining interests.

Here are ten practical and inspiring actions, inspired by Maxima’s courage and resilience, to bring positive change to your community.

1. Stand Firm for What You Believe In - Just as Maxima defended her land, stand by your principles and protect what’s important to you and your community. Believe in the value of your actions, whether it's a clean neighborhood, preserving nature, or promoting fairness.

2. Educate Others on Local Issues - Start conversations with friends, family, and neighbors to raise awareness about issues impacting your community, such as environmental protection, clean water, or healthy food access. Knowledge sharing is a step toward collective action.

3. Lead by Example in Environmental Care - Small actions like reducing waste, conserving water, and encouraging recycling can set a powerful example. Inspire others by showing how simple habits can help preserve resources.

4. Create Safe Spaces for Discussion - Organize informal gatherings to discuss community issues. These can be small, friendly meetings where people feel safe sharing concerns and ideas for solutions, much like Maxima’s gatherings with supporters.

5. Collaborate with Local Activists and Groups - Reach out to others already working for change and see how you can support them. Volunteering your time or skills can amplify the impact and foster a spirit of collaboration and resilience.

6. Document and Share Stories of Resilience - Like Maxima’s story inspires us, share stories of local people making a difference. Use social media, write a blog, or create simple posters around the community to highlight these efforts and inspire others to get involved.

7. Use Your Voice to Protect Local Resources - Whether it’s a park, water source, or community center, protect what makes your community unique. Write letters, speak up at local meetings, and encourage others to join, showing collective care for these shared assets.

8. Encourage Youth to Appreciate Nature - Organize nature walks, park clean-ups, or gardening days for young people. This will build their connection to the environment and help them become future protectors of your community’s natural resources.

9. Build a Support Network for Resilience - Stand up for one another, offer emotional support, and encourage those facing challenging situations. A strong community is built on unity and resilience, supporting each other through challenges.

10. Stay Positive and Determined - Maxima’s journey is a testament to perseverance. Face setbacks with optimism and focus on the difference you’re making, no matter how small. Your determination will inspire others to believe in their power to create change.

These actions may seem simple, but collectively, they foster a resilient, informed, and active community. Inspired by Maxima, you can make a difference by protecting what you care about and motivating others to join the effort!
