When life gets a little too hectic and you need a quick change of pace, then visit Explore.org for a bear break. Or, perhaps an elephant or a walrus break. Explore.org has live web cameras in different locations throughout the world that bring nature real time to your computer.

Explore.org’s mission is, “to champion the selfless acts of others, create a portal into the soul of humanity and inspire lifelong learning.” They purport to be “the world's leading philanthropic live nature cam network and documentary film channel.”

Recently, one live feed showed the brown bears of Katmai National Park in Alaska (United States) salmon fishing. At one viewing, there were 17 brown bears in the river by a waterfall using different techniques to catch the migrating salmon. It was mesmerizing to watch. This particular feed came from a US National Parks Service camera.

The site includes off season video clips, best times to view and educational information about the wildlife. Here’s an interesting fact from the website. A brown bear may eat up to 30 salmon per day consuming a potential 100,000 calories!

The website is a good complement to educational programs in local schools, particularly for children who have little or no access to nature. The video feeds may be interesting additions in a number of venues, such as nursing homes, school cafeterias, and offices. Watching them may provide a healthy mental break for people stressed out at work. Parents can use the video feeds to teach their children about nature and the world we live in and stimulate a child’s imagination. Or, perhaps, your hometown may be inspired to set up their own nature cameras. One community is known for its osprey and people worldwide come together virtually each spring to watch the birds nesting, hunting and rearing a new generation of these raptors.

The world is full of natural beauty and wonder and Explore.org makes it easy and convenient to experience it.
