The rate at which we produce and consume plastics is unsustainable, affecting our health and harming our natural systems. Microplastics can be found in our bodies now, and we have no idea what risks they pose to our health.

In 2022, 175 nations of the UN Environmental Assembly voted to develop a legally binding agreement on plastic pollution and forge a draft agreement by the end of 2024. The UN’s International Negotiating Committee is meeting in Ottawa, Canada (April 23 to 29) to develop a workable agreement with a possible ban by 2040.

Large oil companies are moving more resources into plastic production as they see a future decline in gasoline-powered engines and vehicles. Along with some countries, they resist any curbs or bans on plastic production based mostly on economic, financial, and convenience reasons.

Practical Actions for Individuals and Local Communities.

Join the fight against plastic pollution with these 10 practical actions:

1. **Reduce Single-Use Plastics:** Carry a reusable water bottle, coffee cup, and shopping bags. Say no to plastic straws and utensils.

2. **Recycle Responsibly:** Separate plastics from other waste and ensure they're properly cleaned before recycling—research local recycling facilities to understand what can be recycled.

3. **Educate Others:** Host information sessions or workshops in your community about the environmental impacts of plastic pollution. Share informative articles and videos on social media.

4. **Support Legislation:** Write letters to local representatives advocating plastic reduction policies. Sign petitions and participate in community meetings to voice support for plastic-reducing measures.

5. **Participate in Clean-ups:** Organize or join beach, river, or neighborhood litter clean-ups. Document and share your efforts on social media to inspire others.

6. **Adopt Sustainable Habits:** Choose products with minimal or recyclable packaging. Buy in bulk to reduce packaging waste. Invest in reusable containers for food storage.

7. **Volunteer:** Volunteer for organizations organizing plastic pollution awareness campaigns or environmental education programs, such as tree planting events or habitat restoration projects.

8. **Encourage Businesses:** Speak to local businesses about adopting eco-friendly alternatives to single-use plastics. Patronize businesses that prioritize sustainability.

9. **Compost Organics:** Start a compost bin in your backyard or participate in a community composting program. Use compost to enrich soil in gardens and green spaces.

10. **Lead by Example:** Share photos and stories of your sustainable lifestyle on social media. Host eco-friendly gatherings where guests bring their own dishes and utensils. Show others that reducing plastic waste is achievable and rewarding.
