John Wambugu, a business administration and development communications graduate, stumbled upon the devastation while witnessing the aftermath of the floods around Lake Baringo during a UNICEF photo shoot in Baringo County, Kenya.
John Wambugu uses his passion for photography to inspire social change by funding education, creating jobs, and changing lives. Shocked by the destruction in Baringo County, Kenya, he founded MindMe International and participated in the Canon Miraisha program. John has trained African youth to advocate for the UN Sustainable Development Goals. He established a public library in Mathare, Nairobi to reduce crime and encourage education. His efforts, including solar-powered infrastructure and workshops, have earned international recognition, expanding his impact across Kenya and beyond.
This encounter ignited a decade-long humanitarian journey. Linking his passion for photography to becoming a Canon Certified Trainer, he traveled across Africa advocating for the UN Sustainable Development Goals through photography.
In Nairobi's Mathare slum, he addressed educational challenges by founding the Laibu Mtaani community library, financed partially from his photography store earnings. Despite initial hurdles, like the lack of electricity and high crime rates, he engaged the community, reducing crime and enabling children to access the library for study. The project's success has led to partnerships with organizations such as Canon, which offers professional development workshops.
John plans to replicate this model across 47 counties in Kenya and expand internationally. Having moved from his own shop to lead Canon's professional imaging team in East Africa, he remains committed to MindMe International's humanitarian efforts, including community support during the COVID-19 pandemic. His journey highlights the transformative power of empathy and the camera and the power of small acts of kindness to create meaningful change.
