Peat and peat bogs are the most efficient ecosystem to capture carbon and address climate change. They are also the least researched climate change solution, according to an article published by MercoPress, the South Atlantic News Agency, on April 25, 2022
Large expanses of peat bogs cover southern Chile, Patagonia, and Tierra del Fuego. Saving them can significantly contribute to changing the carbon load in that part of the world.
The Chilean Ministry of Culture and Arts ran a national contest where the winner could design a centerpiece display for the Venice Biennale. The Venice Beinnale is an international art show held every two years in Venice, Italy, featuring architecture, visual arts, film, dance, music, and theater. It is one of the most important events in the contemporary art world.
The winner of the competition created a display called "Turba To" l Hol-Hol Tol, "which means "Heart of the Peat Bogs," in the indigenous language of southern Chile. The exhibit underlines the properties of peat bogs and the need for conservation precisely because of their conditions. The display is part of the Chilean Pavilion at the Venice Biennale.
The display advocates a joint effort of the arts, sciences, and traditional knowledge to promote research and an ecological transition to a more livable and cared for environment. It is a unique and exciting combination of knowledge, art, and culture. It goes beyond the usual groups that work together on climate action.
Climate change affects all of humanity. Our collective ability to respond to it will come from millions of individual people, decisions, and solutions. One way you can help is to foster dialog in your hometown. This article inspires us to think outside the box and bring together people and institutions in our communities. These may include people we would not usually think of convening to contribute to solutions. Your community may have opportunities to add players not typically at the climate action table. Thinking more broadly can expand the network and multiply the impact. Time is of the essence. Be in the solution.
