A better planet with every search. The simplest way to plant trees and be climate active every day. So reads the moniker for a little-known web search engine, Ecosia, a company based in Berlin, Germany.

It is really quite simple. Every time you use the internet with Ecosia’s search engine you gain credit for planting a tree. Approximately 45-50 searches equals 1 tree planted. You can track your tree-planting progress with the search engine. To-date, Ecosia has planted approximately 159,000,000 trees.

The trees are planted by local organizations in 35 countries with 70 active projects. Some of the recipient countries include Brazil, Indonesia and Burkino Faso. Over 500 native tree species are planted where they are needed most to help preserve the biodiversity of that region. You can view information about Ecosia’s active projects worldwide at their website.

Ecosia donates 100% of their profits for climate action with 80% going to tree-planting projects. The searches you make on the Ecosia web browser are powered by their solar panels twice over making the company more than carbon neutral. The claim to be “radically transparent” and they pledge to keep your data private refusing to create a profile of you or sell your data to advertisers. “We want your trees, not your data.” The search engine can be added easily to your web browser.
