Shirley Raines, founder of Beauty 2 the Streetz, has dedicated her life to serving the homeless on Skid Row in Los Angeles, a community where around 8,000 people live in precarious conditions. Her journey into this work stems from a history of personal loss, pain, and resilience. After the tragic death of her son in 1990 and subsequent struggles with anxiety and financial instability, Raines found healing in helping others. In 2017, she joined a church’s feeding mission to Skid Row, where she felt an immediate connection to those facing hardships. “I never wanted to leave,” she says, describing her deep compassion for the people there.
Raines started Beauty 2 the Streetz to bring dignity, warmth, and self-worth to people society often overlooks. Her services go beyond basic needs; each week, Raines provides meals, clothing, hygiene items, and personal care to the homeless, such as haircuts and makeovers. She affectionately calls her clients "Kings" and "Queens," seeking to uplift their spirits and restore a sense of humanity through physical touch, self-care, and compassion.
Raines’s mission became even more vital during the pandemic as resources for homeless individuals dwindled. With many services halted, she adapted, switching to bagged lunches and collaborating with the Los Angeles County Department of Health Services to distribute masks, sanitizer, and hygiene essentials. Social media supporters rallied to help her provide meals, water, and essential items. Her team, including Fighters for the World MC – a motorcycle group that provides safety and security – ensured people knew where to find her setup amidst the chaos of Skid Row.
Raines’s efforts have brought much-needed support to over 4,500 individuals in Skid Row. Her work offers not only necessities but also moments of happiness and dignity. Medical director Heidi Behforouz highlights Raines’s impact, noting that she “is giving people hope, a break, dignity, some fun… reminding us that we’re all human.”
Looking forward, Raines aims to continue expanding her reach and forming partnerships to support Skid Row residents. She reflects on how this journey has brought her peace despite her grief. “My son didn’t come out for 30 years,” she shares. “But he [her son] is the reason I do what I do.”
Raines’s story shows the power of purpose, reminding us that even through immense hardship, we can find healing by lifting others. Her dedication to restoring dignity in a forgotten community has transformed lives, proving that compassion and resilience can shine light into the darkest places.
Inspired by Shirley Raines' compassionate approach, here are ten practical, simple, and cost-free ways to create positive change in your community:
1. Listen and Show Empathy - Spend time with community members, particularly those who feel marginalized or overlooked. Show genuine interest, listen to their stories, and tell them they are valued and heard. Empathy can make a significant impact on someone’s day.
2. Organize Community Meet-Ups - Set a regular time each week or month to gather people for a meet-up in a public space, like a park or community center. These gatherings can provide a safe space to share ideas, offer mutual support, and strengthen community bonds.
3. Provide Personal Care Services - Offer simple care like haircuts, essential grooming, or helping people feel fresh and presentable. These small gestures can boost self-esteem and restore dignity. A little personal care goes a long way in uplifting someone’s spirits.
4. Give Words of Encouragement - Raines uses uplifting titles like "Kings" and "Queens" to address those she helps, emphasizing their worth and dignity. Use empowering and positive language with those you encounter. Calling someone a friend or recognizing their strengths can be profoundly validating.
5. Offer Your Time to the Elderly and Isolated - Visit or check in on elderly or isolated people in your area. A friendly chat, a walk together, or even a quick call to ask about their day can reduce loneliness and make them feel valued.
6. Clean Up Public Spaces Together - Organize a few people to clean up a park, street, or community area. Keeping spaces tidy and cared for makes everyone feel prouder about their environment, and it’s an easy, immediate way to make a visible difference.
7. Connect with People Through Hobbies or Skills - Share a skill or hobby you have—like storytelling, drawing, or fitness—by offering free classes or activities for anyone interested. This can bring people together, promote learning, and provide a positive outlet for energy.
8. Spread Positivity Through Simple Acts - Leave encouraging messages or small notes of kindness in public areas. For example, stick uplifting notes on noticeboards, sidewalks, or bus stops. Little messages of hope can brighten someone’s day and remind them they are not alone.
9. Lead by Example in Kindness and Patience - Model the community you want to live in by practicing patience, showing kindness in every interaction, and offering help when you see someone struggling. Actions like helping neighbors carry groceries or letting someone go ahead in line promote a supportive, caring environment.
10. Build Safe Spaces and Encourage Vulnerability - Create a group or platform (even if informal) where people can speak openly about their challenges without judgment. Providing a place where others feel comfortable sharing struggles or joys can foster community trust, solidarity, and mutual healing.
These steps, though simple, have the potential to create meaningful, lasting connections and uplift those around you, demonstrating the power of kindness and human connection.
